The John Deere facilities make up the majority of the Local 838 Amalgamated Union.  In the late 1970's the Waterloo Deere operations had nearly 11,000 bargaining unit employees.  The recession of the 1980's and resulting crash of the farm economy decimated employment, and caused thousands of employees to permanently lose their jobs.  Added to that, the corporate philosophy of downsizing and outsourcing has led to reduced bargaining unit employment levels at Waterloo Deere operations in the 3,500 range.

The Shop Committee hierarchy utilized in Waterloo is as follows:
1.  Shop Chairman of the unit
2.  Committeepersons for defined areas of each unit
3.  Stewards within the Committeeperson's area
4.  An Assistant Steward for each Steward
